Goya Refresco Mandarin Soda

Goya Refresco Mandarin Soda
Goya is fantastic at making ginger beer. Goya is absolutely horrible for producing Malta Goya. For everything else they fall into the average and not so great categories. This soda unfortunately falls under not so great.
There are two general types of orange soda, ones they are carbonated orange juice and those that are the generic fake orange flavor that is produced by every store brand ever. I am strangely a fan of both for some reason. I knew this wasn't going to be carbonated juice, but I had high expectations that it would be a different form of the fake orange flavor. Mandarin's are a higher quality orange, so I wanted it to be a higher quality of soda. Unfortunately, it was not. It tastes like someone took that slightly different fake orange soda and mixed it with too much unflavored soda water. This is mostly generic sweet, soda water flavored, with an orange flavor in the background. If it were a beverage with low sugar content I would understand and accept it, but this has 44g of sugar in it and that is more than anyone needs. I should probably stop drinking this, as I'm not enjoying it and I don't need all this sugar.

Goya Refresco Guarana Soda

Goya Refresco Guarana Soda
I've been trying to figure out how to best describe the flavor of this soda. It has a specific taste that I just could not put my finger on, as hard as I might try. I decided to go back and read some reviews of other guarana flavored sodas that we have written, and none of them seemed quite right. In the past I have talked about how sodas of this nature taste like a fruitier version of kola champagne aka liquid bubble gum. Seeing as this doesn't completely gross me out and make me feel like I'm drinking a sweet shop, I kept reading. I finally came across a review where I compared guarana to pineapple flavored bubble gum, and I believe that is as accurate as I'm going to get. Luckily the gum flavor is pretty low. Actually, so is the pineapple. It's like someone took hints of those two flavors and mixed it in with a general fruitiness. They then took that concoction and mixed it with generic bubbly sugar water. The result is this soda.

The bottle says nothing about caffeine, but the guarana plant has one of the highest concentrations of caffeine found in nature, so I'm sure this thing will pack a punch that will wake unexpecting people right up. Me, I'm just going to have a couple of sips and see where things take me.

Goya Hydro Health Guava Passion Fruit

Goya Hydro Health Guava Passion Fruit
Last night as I was purchasing a loaf of Italian bread and an avocado for some late night hangout snacks (yes I ate almost all of it myself, and yes it was delicious.) I saw that Goya had ventured into the “Vitamin Water” world with a new line of drinks called Hydro Health. The cashier told me that Goya has been going crazy and is making everything these days. She was dumbfounded that they now made baby food and these drinks. That was all of the examples I was given, so I can only assume that Goya has two new product lines. Perhaps two=everything in some worlds.

It seems that for the entire Hydro Health line Goya decided to forgo cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup, and kept them all zero calories. They did so by using erythritol and stevia, so that it would be zero calories and all natural. The end result turned out surprisingly well. It doesn't taste overly diet at all. In one of those blind taste tests that were all the rage in the 80's I bet a good majority of the participants wouldn't even realize this was diet. It may be the most un-diet diet beverage I have ever tried.

This is just as good as any Vitamin Water or any of the other similar brands out there. It's a little light on the flavor, but I actually prefer it that was. It's supposed to be a water drink, so I don't want it to taste like a mouthful of sweetener and artificial flavor. It's light and it's smooth. It has more of a generic tropical taste rather than a heavy guava or passion fruit, but I can look past it since it's so refreshing.

Goya Refresco Apple Soda

Goya Refresco Apple Soda
Who would have guessed that Goya would make a decent apple soda? Not me, that's who. Their fruit sodas tend to be by the book generic pop, almost to the level of store brand. Can I also take a moment to vent on how I think it's wasteful when companies spend the money to package their sodas in glass bottles, yet don't shell out the extra cash to use a decent sweetener? This is all corn syrup, and that really might be it's only downfall.

It's carbonated apple juice, and it tastes great. It really reminds me a lot of the various apple sodas I've had from Europe. The downfall is the thickness of it due to HFCS. Had they used cane sugar, this easily would have been a high four. Instead it stays at a respectable three.

Goya Refresco Grape Soda

Goya Refresco Grape Soda
My ladyfriend's parents went on vacation awhile back and they brought me a couple or rad looking drinks. They were in glass bottles with burlap, rope and ribbons glued to them. They looked incredible and my mind raced with what type of sodas may be encased. I imagined they were some local pop that the residents of that tropical isle made with fresh fruit and love....lots of love. When I cut off the burlap I was a bit disappointed to see that it was only a Goya grape soda. I have nothing against Goya, but I can find then at a variety of grocery stores around Buffalo. As a result this has sat on my "To Drink" shelf for a few months. Today I decided its day had come.

It tastes exactly like you would expect it too. It has the classic grape soda flavor that is somewhere between melted candy and melted freezie pops. If you were expecting something that tasted more like natural grapes, you would be disappointed. Since it tastes exactly like I expected I am fine with it and I'm going to enjoy the ride.

Goya Refresco Cola Champagne

Goya Refresco Cola Champagne
I had no idea what this was going to taste like. I didn't think it was going to be like cola, but I was guessing maybe a ginger ale taste. I wasn't expecting this to taste like bubblegum. This really excited me when I smelled bubblegum because it's one of my favorite flavors of soda. This is different than other gum sodas I've had. To be specific, this tastes exactly like gumballs. Mary Liz thinks it tastes like white gumballs, which is why she doesn't like it much.

Not me though, I love this drink! It's not incredible, and some of my love for it might be due to the rash of horrible drinks I've had lately. Nevertheless, this is good and I look forward to finishing this bottle.

Goya Coctail

Goya Coctail
Summer is a great time. Every year I wait for the three weeks a year where it's nice out. It seems that every day someone is having a barbecue or a backyard party or something. People who live in a tropical climate don't know what it's like. They live with it all of the time and don't have anything to look forward to. Summer vacation was the greatest time, every time, because it's so cold for so long. How long do I have to wear gloves and two jackets? Seriously. It's getting ridiculous. Summer is the time for fresh vegetables, fruits, and fish.

I would love to use the word "embodiment", but I feel that might be a bit excessive. It also might just be plain wrong, but this is my review and I can do what I want.

V8...I love it. Now that they have low sodium V8, everyone doesn't have a reason to crack open a can and get some vegetables. It's like a salad without all of the work. This drink is like a spicier, seafoodier V8. Yeah, dude, there's clam "extract" in there. I trust that doesn't mean poop, but what do I know? I feel like the FDA wouldn't approve of American's drinking poop. It's just the smallest bit clammy. Enough that it's recognizable, but also just enough where you don't want to throw up because someone tricked you into drinking clam juice instead of a Mountain Dew.

Goya Refresco Sangria

Goya Refresco Sangria
Not being a drinker, I don't know what authentic sangria tastes like. I've seen it before and I asked my girlfriend what it tastes like. She said it's just red wine and fruit.

I think this drink was very grape and not much else. I expected fruit and I would have been fine with indefinable fruit flavor, but this just tasted like a weak grape pop. If it was just grape, that would be better than most grape pops I've had in the past because it's typically way too sweet for my tastes.

Was it too much to ask for; a couple apples, grapes, orange, and whatever else you might put in authentic sangria? I might like a tea with that instead of a carbonated drink. Any suggestions?

Goya Malta Original

Goya Malta Original
I used to hate this stuff. Hate! With a fervor! Hate! Now I'm a little bit older and my palette that has been trained to have more distinguished tastes.

This tastes like raisin bran. Just like it except possibly more sweet. This was the original version that is made with cane sugar and honestly isn't as bad as I remember.

I would not drink it again but I am not giving it a bad review. Not my taste but it's a good drink. I'll admit it.

Goya Jamaican Style Ginger Beer

Goya Jamaican Style Ginger Beer
When we recently reviewed some ginger drinks and complained that the burn wasn't as strong as we wanted, people told us we needed to check this out. Holy crap were they right. This has the strongest burn I've experienced in a long time. It feels like my throat and stomach are filled with red-hot embers. You know what? It's great. It's definitely a sipping soda. The more you drink the tamer the burn, but don't wait too long between sips or you'll get a fresh kick in the butt. It has capsicum in it, which is a hot pepper. That is definitely in cahoots with the ginger. I love it. It just hurts in all the right ways.

Goya Malta

Goya Malta
Imagine the following. It's Thanksgiving. Everyone has just sat down for a wonderful traditional meal. Suddenly your crazy aunt comes in and pours eight gallons of pureed prunes on everything. That is exactly what Malta Goya tastes like to me. It is the worst beverage I have ever tasted in my life.
Years ago, when I first moved into my current apartment, we had a taco party. Someone thought it would be a good idea to bring a case of this. We all in turn thought it would be a great idea to all chug them at the same time. I then spent the next hour laying on my bathroom floor cringing in pain. I didn't even get another one of these to drink while I wrote this review (which is how I normally do it). It's that bad that I never want the flavor on my tongue again. I wish I could give it a negative rating.
Like this beverage, my sister's boyfriend is from Puerto Rico. I guess people drink it down there like crazy. They can't get enough of it. I can't even come close to understanding that.

Goya Peach Nectar

Goya Peach Nectar
Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of peaches, and with this drink every sip tastes like a thousand peaches exploding in your mouth. Not only is it all that I could ever want from a juice, it's one of the best beverages I've ever drunk. Make sure you get it in the glass bottles though. The canned version has high fructose corn syrup in it, and is not nearly as good.

Goya Tamarind Nectar

Goya Tamarind Nectar
I am a fan of most of the Goya Nectar drinks. I usually get them in the larger bottles, but this flavor I've only ever seen in a can. I learned today that although the bottles use natural sweeteners, the ones in the cans all seem to be sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup. In my opinion that's already deducted points. The taste of the nectar reminded me of a mix of apple and grape juice, with a strange earthy undertone. It really did nothing for me.
