Freez Kiwi

Freez Kiwi

Danny’s daddy always told him to stay away from certain areas of town. He told them they were dangerous and an unsavory element hung out there. Since as far back as he could remember Danny’s ears were filled with warnings of the danger just a few miles away. His imagination made these areas out to be war zones torn apart by drug dealers and road warriors (he was a huge early Mel Gibson fan). His nights were filled with nightmares of being stuck in these areas and having to fight his way out after saving the president (he also love Escape From New York). There was absolutely no way that he would ever set foot in those neighborhoods. He liked being alive and not strung out, and he wanted to keep it that way.

When Danny was 16 he got his license and his daddy let him take the car out for a ride to celebrate. He left home, and got on the highway to go pick up his cousin so they could go do a few laps at the mall and score some Orange Julius and soft pretzels. It was going to be a good night. He got a few miles from home and without warning the car ran out of gas. He was luckily able to coast over to the side of the road, right before an exit. “Oh no” thought Danny. This was the exit that led to one of the bad neighborhoods that his father spoke of. He had no choice but to walk off the exit and find a gas station or a phone. Seeing as he was only 16 and his parents weren’t insane, he did not have a cell phone. He shoved his hands in his pockets put his head down and began to walk. As got off the exit onto the main road he was surprised to not hear any screams or to see any buildings burning. Actually it didn’t look that much different than where he lived. Luckily there was a small mart a block away. Out side the door Danny paused, drew in a deep breath and pushed open the door. He was instantly greeted by the shop keep who also informed him that there was not a pay phone, but that he was welcomed to use the store phone to call for assistance. Danny made his call to his deeply concerned daddy, and then continued to make some small talk with the cashier. He was a nice funny man, who even offered Danny a soda. It was like nothing Danny had ever seen before. He was shocked to discover it was from Lebanon. For all he knew there was nothing but bombed out buildings there and poor people. It was also kiwi flavored, which Danny had never heard of in a soda. He expected it to just taste overly sweet and “green.” He twisted off the gap and took a sip. It did taste a little sweeter than how he normally liked his soda, but he had to admit it really did taste like kiwi, which was a huge surprise. It did taste a little candy like, but in a way that wasn’t gross at all. It was also a shocker to find out that this was a pop that actually had fruit juice in it. The soda was delicious and before he knew it the bottle was gone and his daddy was pulling into the parking lot. He thanked the cashier and left, quickly turning around to buy a sixer of this wonderful soda and gave his thanks again. As he climbed into his dad’s car he thought of several things: A. This neighborhood really was kind of nice. B. He dad was a racist. C. His dad was really a jerk for letting him borrow the car with no gas in it, and without telling him the fuel gauge didn’t work. What a prick.

Ooba Sparkling Hibiscus Kiwi

Ooba Sparkling Hibiscus Kiwi

Our fuzzy little friends the kiwis (no I'm not talking about the indigenous people) are always a nice little treat in their fruit form. I don't know anyone who would ever turn down a kiwi if offered. The problem is that when this little guy gets transformed into a soda it's flavor somehow gets transformed into something resembling green apple. It's not 100% green apple, but the similarities are definitely there, and it only vaguely resembles the great fruit it once was. It comes in waves. First a very brief kiwi taste, then the apple and then a milder kiwi flavor returns in the aftertaste. I don't understand the science behind it and I'm wearing a white lab coat and everything. My hypothesis would normally be that it has something to do with the hibiscus in it, but I've had a different kiwi soda recently that had a similar taste. I guess the answer was lost hundreds of years ago with the ancients. It's sad too because I really like kiwi, and I'm not a big fan of green apple flavored things so this was kind of ruined for me.

Calypso Lemonade Kiwi

Calypso Lemonade Kiwi

Calypso claims to be the "Taste of the islands." What I want to know is what islands? Are we talking islands out in the Caribbean, or are we talking some tiny little pieces of land in the middle of lake Minnetonka. If you don't know what that is you really need to brush up on a little movie called Purple Rain. Speaking of, I bet this is how Prince drinks to relax on a hot, hot day. He wakes up early, spends a good portion of an hour talking to himself in the mirror, heads down to his basement studio where he lays down some guitar tracks that would melt your brain, makes some pancakes, and then heads out in the backyard where he inexplicably does the Bat Dance for two hours while sipping on some Kiwi Lemonade. Of course he has his servants die it purple for him before he allows it to pass his lips.

Like all of the Calypso lemonades this is very tart. That is because they use real lemon juice and pulp to make it. You can see the lemon pulp floating in the drink, but unfortunately you can't feel them in your mouth. The thing that really stands out with Calypso is that they actually use fruit juices instead of artificial flavors. I think this may be the first drink I've ever consumed that actually has real kiwi in it. You can really tell in the flavor. Hey if it's good enough for Prince how can you argue with it?

Ramune Kiwi

Ramune Kiwi

Well well well. What do we have here? Is it a good kiwi pop? You betcha. I was surprised. I like the flavor of kiwi, but as a fruit, it's not my favorite. I don't like how soft it is. I want it to be firmer. I can't have everything I want, but I can have an opinion on things. This was very sweet, but who cares. Like I said, I feel that a good kiwi drink is few and far between. This is pure kiwi, too, so your argument of "This company makes a kiwi strawberry drink that is to die for!" is not only lame and melodramatic, it's also now what I'm talking about as it's a mix.

Grab a bottle, have a little kid open it because I think that they would get more enjoyment out of it than you, and drink it. It's good. Really. Also, I just discovered they make an octopus Ramune so now I've got to put that on my list.

Aloevine Kiwi

Aloevine Kiwi

This is the same as the rest of the Aloevine drinks. It’s sweet aloe juice with wonderful chunks. At first I didn't think it tasted much like kiwi, but the further on I got the stronger it was. It's definitely not a natural kiwi flavor, more artificial. It's still great though.
I wonder if kids would think this was fun to drink, or if they would be totally grossed out. I hope they would see the fun in it like I do.
