Zingiwell Java Turmeric Lemon

Zingiwell Java Turmeric Lemon
What a cool lemonade. I bet you could give this to some dumb kid and he wouldn't know what is different. Man, kids are so dumb. You could probably put anything in front of a kid and as long as it's not in between their zit covered face and phone with an inevitably broken screen and they would drink it.

This is lemonade with a nice, strong turmeric taste and a little kick. You can taste everything in here down to the final ingredient, your favorite and mine, ginger. Alright, maybe it's not your favorite, but it's good. It also goes down smooth regardless of all of the otherwise foreign ingredients. It might not be popular here in the States but unless it's pizza or bacon flavored, us idiots wouldn't know a good thing if it slapped them across their fat stomach.

Hey kid! Take your headphones off in the car with your parents. Let me in on a little secret; they don't like it.

I was legitimately frightened to drink this. We got a new intern at work and I thought it would be great to let him "blind taste test" this. The joke was on me because it's actually good. I've had other turmeric drinks but this is different. The lemon and ginger give it a slight burn that I couldn't get enough of. There is no "Indian food" feel at all. It's somehow smooth yet "hot." It's as if you had a ginger beer and calmed that son of a gun down with some honey.

This intern is going to have to pay double time next time because if someone gave this to me, they'd never get it back. I was wrong to judge it and will buy it again and again. Thanks for existing.

Maine Root Lemon Lime

Maine Root Lemon Lime
Oh, I'm sorry Mister Know It All. I didn't know that you were in attendance. You know all this stuff about saving money on car insurance, the best way to check if a cake is done and so many things about household remedies that I don't know where to start. Well here is something for you, friend. A classic lemon lime pop. Why don't you give your smart, dumb mouth a little treat?

"Woah" is right, you dummy. You think you thought that you knew everything but you don't. This is a kick to the mouth. It's lemon and lime but there are spices in there that surprise your ignorant tongue. It's got a good, genuine flavor but there are special secrets that not even you and all your worldly knowledge know about. Spicy secrets. I would guess that there is some ginger in those secrets. That's a guess, though. Not a "know."

So you can't know everything and I hope that I've humbled you with this simple pop that you thought was oh so simple. You don't know everything and if there was a crown giveaway to those that knew everything, you might want to look through your old emails and find the address because you have to return it.

Maine Root Mandarin Orange Soda

Maine Root Mandarin Orange Soda
The rocky coasts of Maine are a wonderful place. It's blustery and the air is salty. There is no other place on this Earth (that I have visited) that makes you feel more like a sailor. When I'm there I constantly feel like I should be wearing waders and smoking a pipe, telling tales of Old Gregg.

While it is a wonderful place that makes me feel connected to the vastness of the sea, there is one thing that could not possibly grow there: oranges. I believe that is why this soda lacks a little something. The ingredients in here are carbonated pure water, organic cane juice and spices. There is no mention of fruit of any kind. I suppose ground up orange rind could be considered a spice, but to me that is not orange flavored.

To me this just has a general sweet soda taste with some flavoring in it that tastes more of orange holiday spice than and actual mandarin orange. It's also not consistent from sip to sip either. The bottle says settling is normal, and to roll it to help mix it up, but there is only so much rolling you can do with a carbonated drink, and I believe I reached that point without achieving consistency

In it's own way it's a decent drink. Just be advised to not go into it expecting a standard cheap orange soda, nor a carbonated orange juice. It is neither of these things, nor does it fall anywhere between them. It is its own entity, forged in the caverns of Maine. After you try it, tell me one thing: “What did it mean to you to drink that?”

Blue Sky Organic Orange Divine

Blue Sky Organic Orange Divine
Last night was the US Presidential Election, and Barack Obama will be our president again for the next four years. I was half-heartedly watching the election coverage on my laptop as I read last night. Watching states turn blue was a treat. I was waiting for the swing states to switch over (mostly Ohio, Florida and Virginia). I had decided that when Florida went blue I would celebrate with a nice orange soda to pay my respects to the people in that state who made the right decision. Time went by and Florida stayed grey. I got to thinking about that orange pop and I really wanted it. In my head I justified that by drinking it I would help usher on the counting of the votes. I think I messed things up guys. Luckily other parts of the country picked up the slack and the blue won, but I'm pretty sure the fact that I picked such a lack luster soda was what delayed the count (it's 11am now and it still isn't done).

Blue sky was one of the first organic sodas that I remember seeing on the market. In 2000 or so I remember going to the local health food store to get a nice seitan sandwich and I grabbed my first can of Blue Sky (not Orange Divine). I remember thinking it was good, but nothing spectacular. That's fine, not everything needs to be over the top. I thought I knew what I was getting into with this can. It has natural orange flavor in it, so I was expecting it to be a lesser tasting/more sweetened Orangina. I ended up getting something that was between a sparkling orange juice and your everyday orange soda, except it had been filtered through the general taste of a health food store. Something was definitely off about it. It tasted as if it had been lightly spiced for some unknown reason. There is nothing listed in the ingredient list that should give it such a flavor, so I'm stumped.

Again, I apologize to the folks of Florida for delaying the count of their votes. If I had chosen a better orange soda I bet this would be all wrapped up.

Blue Sky Organic Ginger Ale

Blue Sky Organic Ginger Ale
A little bite and a genuine ginger taste: this is the model right here, ladies and gentlemen. If this had been labeled a "ginger beer" I would have been upset that there wasn't enough bite. I have had ginger beers that taste like this, which is disappointing. This little guy packs a punch for a ginger ale. One word ruins a drink. Let it be known. It's all about expectations. I drank the Jamaican Ginger Ale and now I don't remember if there was a difference between the two.

This was probably one of the best ginger ales I have ever had. That's a thing to be said. Now, when people say to me, "Mike, you look great today. What is the best ginger ale you've ever had? I'm nauseous from being on this giant yacht of yours with real gold lions scattered throughout." I will say, "It happens, man. When you go out on a gigantic yacht that you can call your own you get used to it. One of my favorite ginger ales that you can get most places is Blue Sky ginger ale. Also, did you know that those giant gold lions have candy in their mouth? Reach on in and get a Fun Size Kit Kat. Don't puke on my boat."

Hype Energy Organic

Hype Energy Organic
Being a Hype Man is no easy job, but what can you do? I was born a Hype Man and I'll die a Hype Man. My mother tells me she met my father at a concert in the 80s. When I was younger she always led me to believe that my father was Grandmaster Flash, but years later it came out that while she was aiming for The Flash, she settled for Creole, the original Hype Man. Once I learned the true identity of my dad I became obsessed with becoming a Hype Man myself. I went so far as to pitch a reality show to VH1 that would star Flavor Flav, just so I could get a chance to meet him and ask him to mentor me. Needless to say, it worked. I spent years learning the tricks of the trade from “the clocked one.”

Finally after two decades of grueling dedication I am the prime Hype Man for a rapper. For legal reasons I can't divulge whom in fact I'm hyping until I make my stage debut, but you would be shocked and awed. We've run through the routine a million times, but I still get nervous. When I called Flav for some words of encouragement he hipped me to this drink. It really is shocking that for how he is obsessed with organic food, even though he put just about every drug into his system. He won't even drink a Red Bull now. He claims this drink gives Hype Men the energy they need in a healthier way and it tastes rather unique. I have to agree with him. It tastes like someone liquefied a whole mess of Double Bubble Gum and mixed it with some apple juice (and a little bit of that energy drink flavor). It may sound gross, but it's actually quite delicious. If this was the first energy drink I ever tried I would probably initially think it was gross, but being well versed in the flavor this is a great change of pace. It doesn't taste very chemical, and when it's ice cold it's a nice shock to your taste buds. Best of all is it doesn't have that chemical energy drinkness to it.

The crowd is getting restless. They need me. Me! I must go out and pump them up and add my little exclamations and interjections to my boss's raps. The world isn't ready for me with the little extra Hype I got from this energy drink.

Maine Root Mexicane Cola

Maine Root Mexicane Cola
I've been looking for a nice, high quality cola for a while now. Jay was turned on to my search, too so now we're both on a little bit of a liquid quest. I went to get lunch and run errands with one of my bosses today and we stopped at a little sandwich place that usually has pretty good drinks. This, which is new, was there and I had to get it. I might not stop until I find a cola that I absolutely love. Five bottles and I'll stop and move on to something else. I was very anxious to get my hands on this. So much in fact that when I used the old "take the cap off the bottle by hitting it against a concrete curb" trick, this happened:

I have never done this before. If I ever break something, it's usually a small crack or a piece but this was the entire lip. It was downright hard to drink and quite dangerous. I may have shards of glass inside of me because if you think that not having a crucial part to a bottle will stop me from drinking you're crazy. I did what I set out to do which was drinking this cola and it was good. Cola, being inherently dark, didn't have a lot of the complexity that Maine Root stuff often has. Sure, "spices" was one of the ingredients, but it didn't really get to me. It was a good cola, though and if I had to compare it to something, it would be the Mexican Coke. I personally haven't had the Mexican Pepsi so I can't compare it to that.

I risk my lips and bowels for this website and for what? A great cola? You bet'cha!

Blue Sky Organic New Century Cola

Blue Sky Organic New Century Cola
Earlier today Mike said that he could really go for a nice cola, and he noted that we don't really find too many “non-mainstream” colas. That got me thinking about cola all day, and I didn't think that I had any at home. When I got home later I perused my beverage shelf and discovered that I did have this can hiding in the back. Everything was coming up Milhouse.

Now I don't know what the difference is between this and their Natural Soda Cola. The ingredient lists look the same except this can says “organic cane juice” and the other says “ real sugar.” The order of the ingredients is different as well. This has natural cola nut flavor higher up on the list. I'm assuming they are pretty much the same drink though, except all of the ingredients in this can are organic. Regardless of the difference, the two things that really stand out about this cola over its everyday competitors is the fact that they do use cola nut and also it is caffeine free due to the company using natural ingredients. Neither Coke nor Pepsi use cola nut in their recipes. Instead they use some artificial concoction that they came up with to create a similar flavor. I must say that you can taste the difference, and this certainly tastes more natural and it's not harsh like the previously mentioned brands.

It may not be the best cola I have ever had, and it didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I certainly enjoyed it. If all of the colas in the world were organic this would probably fall somewhere in the middle of the road, but I prefer it over your common gas station alternatives.

Jayone Aloe Pulp Juice Pomegranate

Jayone Aloe Pulp Juice Pomegranate
It's been a long time since I've had an aloe drink. It's not that I have been avoiding them. I just haven't been able to find any that we haven't already reviewed. With a cupboard full of drinks to review, it's kind of hard to justify buying a drink for pleasure. Needless to say, I was excited when I found this bottle at a local Asian market.

First thing, there are barely any chunks of aloe in this. That is my favorite part of aloe drinks so this is already off to a bad start. You know how honey makes some root beers really good? Well it ruins this drink. Even though it's one of the last ingredients on the list, it somehow manages to ruin the delicious taste of pomegranate in this.

If I were to protest outside of the Jayone factory, my sign would say, "Less honey, more chunks!"

Maine Root Root Beer

Maine Root Root Beer
I remember very vividly the day Jay and I bought this root beer. It has half awesome, half speeding home. I'll tell you the story.

Jay and I and my six-month (at the time) son Max went to a handful of stores to get drinks. We went to a discount store and found this and were both surprised that we hadn't reviewed basic root beer. We bought a four pack and continued on with out voyage. We went to an Asian market that we both know and love, and my brothers and mom were telling me about another one that I should check out in the area. On our way to the new, secret one, we passed another one. Once we went in, Max started to get a little whiny. We sped everything up, went to the new place, got a handful of drinks, and the lady behind the register started talking to Max and he was holding back tears. As soon as we left the store, he exploded. Guttural screams. Throat shredding screams. So mixed between that an Everything But The Girl's "The Language of Love" I sped home to get him changed and fed and napped. All the while, Jay and I were sipping on one bottle of this root beer. It was alright, at best, given the circumstances.

Now, three months later, I am testing it again. It's better than it was that dreadful day, but it's still just "a root beer." It's not moving me in any way. There's a small hint of a licorice or anise, but it's nothing that I would say to someone else, "Hey, this is great. It tastes like root beer with licorice or anise in it." It's a good root beer, but that's about all it is.

So I don't know if Max doesn't like the smell of Asian markets, the soothing sounds of Tracey Thorn, or the sound of Jay and I discussing the irks of today's society, but that day was a bad one.

Maine Root Lemonade Maple Syrup

Maine Root Lemonade Maple Syrup
Today was another earth scorching day in Buffalo. I had to run a bunch of errands so I was walking all over the place with the sun beating down on me. I could have really used a drink but I totally forgot to grab this when I left in a hurry this morning.

Maine Root is known for their delicious soda. I personally think their sarsaparilla is one of the best on the market. When I found out they started making lemonade, I was very excited to try it. When I saw it had maple syrup in it, my excitement was immeasurable.

Did it live up to the hype I gave it in my head? It surely did! As far as thirst quenching lemonades, this is one of the best I've ever had. I wish it had more tartness, but the lemon flavor is good and delicious. The maple syrup is what makes this drink amazing. It has this mouth-watering syrup aftertaste that makes me want to drink more.

To the people at Maine Root, thank you for making this but I have a suggestion. Use maple syrup in your root beer and/or sarsaparilla. It's been my dream to find a root beer with it, and I think it would make your already amazing soda unforgettable.

Maine Root Lemonade Ginger-Lemongrass

Maine Root Lemonade Ginger-Lemongrass
I remembered something very important yesterday: I am not a beach person. My somewhat recent vacation to Hawaii had me confused. There I enjoyed the beach, but that was because there were cliffs to jump off of, ropes to swing from, and clear water full of weird sea creatures to see when snorkeling. The beach in Buffalo has none of these things. It has a terrain that is more rocks than sand, and what little sand there is is blowing around in the wind. I went with some friends, and then tried to suck it up as to not bum anyone out. I don't know how good of a job I did, but I can say I tried. To overcome my boredom/trying to escape the suns ever burning rays I hid under an umbrella and drank some lemonade.

Lemonade is the official drink of the summer for me. I can't remember a past summer when I didn't drink obscene amounts of the stuff. When I saw this at Wegmans I was pretty pumped. Maine Root has treated me well in the past with their sodas and now they are throwing ginger lemonade my way. I help off a bit before drinking it because I was expecting the ginger to be super harsh. When I finally drank it I discovered I was mistaken and it's actually pretty tame. This tastes like pretty straightforward lemonade with a bit of ginger mixed in. There's really not burn at all, but there is a ginger flavor hidden under the lemon. It's not crazy impressive, but it's perfect for people who like the taste of ginger, but don't have the tolerance for the burn.

I may not be a beach person, but this drink did help to improve my time spent there.

Maine Root Pumpkin Pie Soda

Maine Root Pumpkin Pie Soda
When I found this my heart skipped a beat. I'm a sucker for fall spice flavored beverages. I really expected it to taste like a sibling of the Reeds Spiced Apple Brew. Between my love of that and the stellar performance Maine Root has put forward so far. I thought this was a shoe in for a 4 or 5 bottle review. Not so much.

There are some spices in the mix, but you can't make out the individual flavors. It's just a jumble. It also tastes like cheap generic store bought pumpkin flavored snacks. I wanted it to be super rich, and for it to taste like a chilly autumn night where I am walking home and some crazy homeless man jumps out from behind a car and hits me in a face with a homemade pumpkin pie (he stole it from a window sill a la Yogi Bear). I lost this game.

Maine Root Sarsaparilla

Maine Root Sarsaparilla
Amazing. That is the first word that comes to mind when drinking this. Sweetness is perfect, the bite is good but not overwhelming, and it goes down smooth. But yet, it's not a smooth drink, it is kinda heavy but in that good root beer/sarsaparilla way. This is by far my go-to Sarsaparilla. I must have drank a half dozen bottles of these over the past couple months before I realized that I forgot to review it each time. It's just so good. It's hard to stop drinking it.

Maine Root Ginger Brew

Maine Root Ginger Brew
This is a great middle ground for ginger beer. It's very flavorful, which is something that is missing from a lot of ginger beers. It also has enough burn as to not be a ginger ale, but at the same time said burn is not overly horrific. I admit I like a crazy burn, but it's not something I want all the time. Don't get me wrong it still has a burn that would probably make a small child cry, but I can get through a whole bottle without praying for the sweet embrace of death to end the pain in my throat.

Blue Sky Organic Root Beer Encore

Blue Sky Organic Root Beer Encore
Blue Sky and Hansen's are both made by the some company. I don't really know why they have two different lines of pop, but they do.
This is a pretty standard root beer. It tastes like what I remember root beer to be like when I was a kid. I have to say that if I drank this back-to-back with the root beers I drank as a kid now, this would be worlds better. It doesn't have any added spices or roots extracts, just a general root beer flavor. When something like that is done right, like this is, it's nothing to scoff at.

Arizona Tea Water Pomegranate

Arizona Tea Water Pomegranate
You think Arizona and you think iced tea. No one thinks about Arizona the state anymore. It is old news, my friends. You might think immigration problems, and that's alright due to its current topical status. Forget about immigrants for a second and think about this: you drinking tea. Relaxing no? Now cool it out a bit. Yeah, take that tea that you made and put it right in the fridge. Now, add a teensy bit of sugar to it to make it a bit more inviting that just a boring old, perfectly previously acceptable tea. Clap your hands together and take a sip, because you're done.

It's a pretty simple idea, right, and many other companies have done it in the past; Honest did it with their "Just a Tad Sweet" teas and they're good. This is along the same lines. It's got a strong, fruity nose to it, but it is a light flavor. You don't get a green tea bite, but you get just the right amount of sweet to know that there's something else (pomegranate) in there.

I like it. It's also completely organic so you can feel good about yourself and the world.

Maine Root Blueberry Soda

Maine Root Blueberry Soda
I thought that it was going to be good but I didn't think that it was going to be this good. When you think of a fruit pop you think of grape or strawberry which is wildly sweet and often a little too much. This is a nice blueberry flavor that tastes like real fruit and not like some artificial scientific fruit. There isn't any cola taste and it's all fruit so there isn't anything covering anything else up.

Main Root has a lot of different flavors and I'm excited to try the rest.
