Rio Grande Cola Champagne

Rio Grande Cola Champagne
To paraphrase the popular children's song/game: “Bubble gum, bubble gum in a bottle, how many mouthfuls will you swallow?” The answer sadly is not many. I love bubble gum. When I was a kid I thought I was going to die when my dentist told me that I wouldn't be able to chew it anymore once I got braces put on. Guess what I did it anyways. I'm also a fan of bubble gum ice cream. My point being is that it is a wonderful flavor, but it just doesn't need to exist in soda form. Something about it is just all wrong. I doubt the makers of cola champagne were shooting to make a bubble gum flavored soda, but that's just what happened with the ingredients they used. This version by Rio Grande is worse than most. It tastes like someone rubbed a piece of gum into a pile of various spices.

I understand that this drink is very popular in the Puerto Rican culture. I guess that if it were something that you grew up with it probably wouldn't seem so bad. On the other hand, this is the same culture that embraced the undrinkable swill that is Malta Goya, so I have my suspicions about their tastes.

Jumex Nectar Apricot

Jumex Nectar Apricot
For the quantity of peaches that I have consumed in my life I am shocked that I have not had more of its less fuzzy cousin the apricot. Truth be told I think I may have consumed maybe three whole apricots during my time on this planet. I have eaten it by the ton in its dried form though. The reason for that is because my mom would always buy a bag from the bulk section for some reason. Dried apples or pineapples would have been my go-to, but she always chose the apricot.

This is 27% juice and all of it is apricot. A lot of companies cut their juice with apple fluid, but Jumex keeps it strong with pure apricot. Well, at least the 27% of it that is actually juice and not water or sweetener. Even thought 73% of what is contained in this can is not apricot based, it sure tastes like it is. If you're a fan of apricots and you don't mind juice that is mostly not juice then give this a shot.

Jumex Nectar Papaya Pineapple

Jumex Nectar Papaya Pineapple
Pineapples out of a can are fine. I'm not a "silver spoon" kind of kid. I have eaten all sorts of disgusting things to get by. Plus, they are actually just plain fine. Who has a problem besides, say, Hawaiians who have the ability to just eat them all day long? Buffalo? We get two months of edible pineapples. Oh, we can buy them more months out of the year than that but they taste like garbage. If I can eat consistently good pineapples that taste a little like the can they come in, I'll take it.

This drink tastes like pineapples out of a can with less of a sting. How did I get this far in the review without even mentioning papaya? Well it's simple. I didn't taste it. Anyone who ingests more papaya than I may have been able to find it somewhere in the mix of tin and pineapple, but I didn't get it. I didn't care that I didn't get it as I was totally fine with a fresh can of pineapple juice.

Jumex from Texas and not from Mexico where I thought you would be from, you're great.

Jumex Nectar Guanabana

Jumex Nectar Guanabana
I've never had guanabana before. I was expecting it to be very bitter, very bland, or like guava (solely because they start with the same first two letters). Reality has it that it tastes like none of the above. I think it tastes like a smooth fake strawberry with a little bit of passionfruit in the mix. My ladyfriend thinks it tastes like melon. She is wrong. Dead wrong. Maybe I'm, just being a jerk. It's pretty thick, but it is a nectar and does have corn syrup in it.

Guanabana is also known as soursop, I just discovered. I searched our page and Mike also thought that it tasted kind of like passionfruit. Looks like great (and stupid) minds think alike. Since I thought this was going to be something on the grosser side of the taste spectrum, it was a nice pleasant surprise.

Jolt Cola

Jolt Cola
My first experience with Jolt, like most people, happened when I was a kid. I had heard a lot about Jolt for years. This was a time before energy drinks so the tales of the pop with so much caffeine it makes you jittery would be passed around all the time. I finally came across a bottle at a corner store after school one day when I was 12. I was so excited to find it, but to my dismay it was flat. The store must have had it in the cooler for ages because it tasted like someone opened it up and let it sit for 3 days. It lacked even a single bubble of carbonation. For this reason, I never sought out Jolt again. I was so disappointed by my first experience it killed all the years of anticipation for this soda.

Skip to present day and I come across this bottle. Seeing as I now am more opened minded than I was in my adolescence, I decided to give Jolt another try. Verdict: it's a pretty basic cola, nothing much to it as far as flavor goes. It definitely does have more caffeine than a normal bottle of pop. I'd liken it more to a cup of coffee. In the present world of energy drinks, this is child's play.

College Club Strawberry

College Club Strawberry
Jay and myself got a tour of College Club and I've been sitting on my stock of drinks for months now. I've got a lot of flavors that I really want to try but there are so many other drinks that I have to review I have to put them by the wayside.

Today was yet another scorcher. Maybe "scorcher" is exaggerating a bit but I would say that between the heat and the immense humidity it was borderline unbearable.

This pop sure beat the heat. It was just what I wanted and I was lucky enough to discover that it wasn't too sweet. I am typically scared of that with flavors like strawberry, grape, and other fruit flavors.

This is a large bottle and I put a wine stopper on it. I had to lean it on an angle because it couldn't stand upright. My girlfriend opened the fridge and it exploded...everywhere. It covered the entire bottom half of the fridge and a nice puddle on the floor with a nice coating of strawberry pop.

Needless to say, half of that bottle and went down the drain angrily.

Marburger Farm Dairy Mountainberry Tea Cooler

Marburger Farm Dairy Mountainberry Tea Cooler
About a decade ago Mike, a couple of other friends and myself would go to this crappy bar for "Metal Night." We weren't/aren't super into metal but our friends DJed it and it was something to do. Every week we went and every week about an hour or so in we would get bored and go get pizza and iced tea. Not any iced tea mind you but Fikes tea. It was a really cheap jug of tea that was actually really tasty. We would just kind of disappear from the bar every week and not tell anyone. When people would ask we would jokingly reply that we had a meeting of "Team Cool." That's really a pretty boring story, but it was fun times. The reason I tell you is that I believe Marburger Farms and Fikes to be the same company. The only places I ever found Fikes was in one gas station in Buffalo and one in Zelienople, PA (A terrifying town that is home to the Mercer Family). I'm sure you'll hear all about them at some point. The reason I think they are the same is that I would always stop at that gas station on my way to Pittsburgh to pick some up. When I went a couple of days ago Fikes was nowhere to be found but Marburger Farms was there in the same style bottles, with the same flavors. I don't know if there was a hostile takeover and to be honest I don't care. What I do care about is that this iced tea still exists.

There are a lot of "ghetto" iced teas out there. Most of them aren't fit to feed to swine. This tea is cheap and should be terrible, but it somehow turned out great. It's definitely more sugar water than tea, but it still has a somewhat tea flavor. They use instant tea powder instead of brewing it, which is normally a big no-no in my book, but again they somehow make it work. I think it helps that they actually use fruit juice in their flavoring instead of some weird chemicals. In case you were wondering "mountainberry" is Pennsylvanian for blackberry.

Ski Lemon Orange

Ski Lemon Orange
Lemon and lime. Lemon and lime. Lemon and lime. It gets old after a while doesn't it? You know that one friend who tells the same story all the time? I've been known to do this, but I can admit it, which makes me above those that don't. Yeah, I'm better than some people. Who cares? Embrace what you're good at. You know what Ski is good at? Mixing lemon and orange and throwing limes in the garbage or giving them to Mexican restaurants for delicious tacos or to bars to put in Corona beers to make them more drinkable. Yeah, I know originally you put limes in because it keeps the flies out, but if there are flies in your bar, find a different bar because someone isn't cleaning sufficiently.

Orange and lemon pop is pretty good. It's less sweet than a lemon lime pop and after you accept that orange took lemon's place, it's not bad.

Good job Ski. You've done a good job of switching it up.

Big Ben's Lime

Big Ben's Lime
Remember when you were 9 and you used to play hockey in the driveway with all your friends? Man, that was awesome. You know what was better? When your friend's mom brought out freezie-pops and you took a break and ate a couple of them. Everyone wanted red and pink, some people wanted purple and orange, some were indifferent to blue and no one wanted green. Why? It was because they used to make you cough. Why? I don't know. Additives? I don't know.

This tastes like it, without the coughing, but with the feeling of "I guess if this is the only one left I'll have it." It smells like cleaning solution and tastes like some sort of dental numbing medicine as if the dentist would give this to you to numb your mouth when you were getting your teeth pulled out or cavities from drinking too much pop. See you soon, Doc.

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Orange

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Orange
This is just as I suspected. Good. I think the fellas and ladies over at Hey Song knew a good thing when they saw it because this is the same type of thing as the apple I had last week. Jay did the grape flavor and felt the same love that I did. So we, the Thirsty Dudes, are all on the same page.

This is the same jelly/Jell-O texture as before, but this time with a sharp, sweet sparking orange juice. Now that I've mastered destroying the can to enjoy this drink, it's simple to share this drink with others. All you need is a pair of pliers and some elbow grease.

Also, as a bonus, I've filmed the first ever video review over at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_sr_P5hW9M so make sure to check it out. It's our first one so be gentle. I did it at work with no one knowing which is why people walked in on us. As you can see, we made him try it. He liked it. You should, too.

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Apple

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Apple
Oh my gosh...look I drink stuff every day. Some good. Some bad. Some strange. Some normal. This drink is so awesome and strange and involved I can't wait to tell you about it.

Individual snack packs of Jello (or equivalent) would be the base of this drink. The base, people. Jello. Base. The base is Jello. Take a bottle of sparkling apple juice and marinate the Jello. Take the mixture and put it in a can and you've got this drink.

I didn't know what to expect so I just gave it to my friend Matt because he saw the can and wanted to try it. He opened it up, smelled it, and then took a...slurp. It totally took him by surprise. He said that there were giant chunks in it and I looked inside and he couldn't have been more right. I brought it over to my friend Mike and tried to pour it into a cup for him and couldn't because the chunks were so big. I eventually resorted to taking a pair of pliers to the can and opening it enough to get it out of the can in its entirety. Now I have a cup of just amber colored sludge and I love it.

The taste is a bit like an energy drink, but it is probably just the strong apple taste making it seem like that. It's a good think that these are cheap, like $1, because everyone is getting a can for Christmas. This drink is fun and this is yet another reason why I love doing Thirsty Dudes.

Jumex Nectar Peach

Jumex Nectar Peach
It's like there was a peach party arranged, but too many people showed up. As a result they had to cut the peach supply (you know like the do with cocaine in the moving pictures). Now there is enough for everyone, but what they get is a peachy beverage, but it doesn't get them as high in flavor town as the pure version would.

Jumex Nectar Guava

Jumex Nectar Guava
Am I alone in thinking that when things are described as being nectar that it means the drink will have a thicker consistency? Juice is thinner and watery, as if the juice has been squeezed from the fruit. Nectar is thicker, as if the fruit was pureed. That is the way my mind works. Jumex apparently does not agree with my train of thought. To me this is a juice, plain and simple. There is nothing wrong with that. I enjoy it quite a bit. It's a nice sugary guava treat. Can you really ever go wrong with guava? I certainly don't think so.
