Do you know what American athletes are missing that those in Asia have access to? Carbonated sports drinks, that is what. Can you imagine being in the middle of a match of some sort, you are exhausted and dripping with sweat, and your trainer hands you a can o “carbonated isotonic drink?” What on Earth is refreshing about that? I was once given sparkling water while playing a show and I nearly spit it everywhere because bubbles are not what you need to quench your thirst. Water is all I want in such times, and I’m not even exerting that much energy. Even the minimum sugar in other sports drinks is a bit off putting to me in such times. Somehow this beverage has persevered for decades. Apparently they have done so without updating their look either, as this can looks more 70’s Olympics than anything else I’ve ever seen.

If you can find it in yourself to look past this products intended purpose the taste isn’t all that bad. It’s strange, but not horrible. It’s like someone mixed Squirt with lemon lime Gatorade. I don’t know why anyone would do such a thing, but apparently someone in Malaysia did and liked the results enough to mass produce it. I really feel that if the grapefruit aspect of this was left out the taste would greatly suffer. Just carbonated Gatorade would be unwanted on all fronts. This way it at least has something interesting about it.

51 Fifty Energy Drink

51 Fifty Energy Drink

Okay sir, and what kind of oil did you want us to put into your car today? 51-50? Sir do you know anything about oil? I dare say you don’t because that number has nothing to do with oil. I’m looking for a response along the lines of 10W-30 or 5W-20. The only two things I know about 51-50 is that I think they were a Canadian band in the 90’s and apparently it’s the California legal code for someone who is a danger to themselves and others. Oh yeah, it’s also a Van Halen record, or Van-Hagar to be more precise.

You say that it’s also the name of an energy drink that you partake in quite a bit? Well I’ve never heard of it, but I’ll keep my eyes out for it. Working in this garage all day I need something to help me keep awake, and I’ll tell you the coffee they have here is butt, if you’ll excuse my French. Oh you have a can I can have? Well thank you sir. I mean I did just insult you, but I appreciate this.

Hmmm…this is actually pretty good. It tastes different than Red Bull and it’s hundreds of imitators. It has a berry heavy fruit punch style flavor, without tasting childish or cheap. It’s a nice change up from the chemical citrus candy flavor that’s the norm. This actually doesn’t taste very chemical at all. You say it’s an energy drink with a boost? What does that mean? Oh the usual suspects such as ginseng, taurine and caffeine are in here, but they also add maca and astragalus root to it? Well sir, I have no idea what those things are but it tastes good and if it gives me energy this will go on my shopping list. They are used to boost the immune system, strengthen vitality, improve sexual desire and raise resistance against fatigue? Well, this drink really does it all doesn’t it?

This has been the weirded oil change I’ve ever given sir, but I appreciate the break and the drink. I really do need to know what kind of oil you would like me to use though.

51 Fifty Extreme Energy Drink

51 Fifty Extreme Energy Drink

Energy drinks throw around terms like “Intense” and “Fierce” all the time. It’s all about marketing and those are the kind of words that are going to catch people’s eyes and make them think they will get the most bang for their buck, if you will. When you take a already potent energy drink and triple the active ingredients in a smaller can; you better believe them when they label it extreme.

I was not ready for this. It was 7PM, I had just eaten a large meal, and I knew I needed to be awake and alert until 4am or so. I know when I drink an energy drink on an empty stomach it gives me the jitters, but when I eat a meal I am normally fine. I didn’t even drink this entire can (about ¾ of it) and within a half hour I was feeling a bit insane. I was a bit shaky and I could feel an energy in my entire body that needed to be put to use. Basically, I felt a more intense version of how I feel when I drink a normal energy drink on an empty stomach. It kept me going all night, and at 4am I was home and still pretty jacked up. I decided to drink a Marley Mellow Mood to be able to get some sleep, and let me tell you that was a terrible idea. Sure, my mind relaxed and I was able to sleep, but apparently my body just kept going. When I woke up the following day I felt like total garbage. It was as if I has not slept at all, and had been doing vigorous activity all night. So yeah, I don’t advise mixing your downers with your uppers. I would make a terrible pill head.

As you can see the functionality of this drink worked wonderfully. Unfortunately that is not our main concern here at Thirsty Dudes. Flavor is first and foremost in our world, and that was lacking in this drink. It has a real bitterness to it, almost like vitamins were dissolved in a Red Bull, but they tried to mask it with a bit of fruity flavoring. It was kind of a chore to make it through as much of the can as I did. I guess you have to sacrifice flavor for this kind of functionality, which is a shame but at least it does what it’s supposed to. I would definitely suggest this if you need to just power through your day with some help no matter the cost to your taste buds.

7 Eleven Classic Lemonade

7 Eleven Classic Lemonade

It's a good thing 7-11 isn't known for their lemonade, because this is a sad excuse for one of my favorite drinks. I don't know why I thought this would help my craving, high hopes perhaps? Nevertheless, I think I figured out 7-11's lemonade recipe:

10 parts water
1 part lemon juice
.005 sugar

The only thing I hate more than watered down lemonade, is flat soda. That doesn't make me dislike this lemonade less, but it makes me thankful that I’m not drinking flat soda.

7 Eleven Go! Smart Honeybush Tea

7 Eleven Go! Smart Honeybush Tea

On a hot day, you should be drinking water. We in Western New York have been suffering drought-like conditions. It rains for a half hour and doesn't rain for two weeks. It's bad. Combined with 85+ degree days day after day, it's getting pretty tiring to go outside. On this hot day and on my way to band practice, I needed something. I drink water at my desk all day but I needed something and this hit the spot. I wish it was twice as large but you can't get everything you want.

It was very lightly sweetened and flavored. It was just a nice, cool lemon honey tea that was instantly refreshing. I wish I had one here. Two. One went down too quickly. It was low in calories, too. I think seventy for the bottle which was quite a bit healthier than the tallboy of Arizona that I wanted to feel nostalgic. I can feel nostalgic another time because now I've got a nice "go to" when I go to 7 Eleven which is rare regardless of their omnipresence.

7 Eleven Go! Yum Chocolate Mocha

7 Eleven Go! Yum Chocolate Mocha

Well this was a pleasant surprise. I dropped my son off at school and his teacher said, "Are you ready for the planetarium?" which reminded me that I didn't make him a lunch like a pile of crap dad. That being said, of the top three things that I dislike doing in life, making school lunch, a task that takes no longer than five minutes is one of them. Putting dishes away, another job that takes five minutes is also there if you're counting.

What does any good dad do when he didn't make his son a lunch? Go to the closest store and buy a turkey and cheese sub and some fruit and a juice. What does he do if he's a Thirsty Dude? Look around for drinks he hasn't reviewed wasting precious time that he doesn't have. That's what. I found this and thought that it might be alright and I've really been sleeping on making cold brew this week. I thought wrong. It's actually great. It's got a great cocoa taste and a great coffee taste. It's not too sweet and everything has their chance to shine. There is milk in it but it's neither milky nor chalky. This is the cold brew I wish I could make at home. This is fantastic.

7Up Nimbooz

7Up Nimbooz

I always knew "classic" soda companies such as Coke and Pepsi sold their drinks in other parts of the world. Until recently I never even considered that they had separate product lines for different countries.
Nimbooz is a beverage that 7Up manufactures for India. It says on the packaging that it is carbonated, but this bottle is not. I don't know what could have caused that to happen. Perhaps the nutritional facts sticker that was put on it (so that it could be sold in the U.S.) is wrong. Maybe something happened in the importation process that caused it to go flat. I'd like to go along with the theory that an irate crewman on board the ocean liner (that this was undoubtedly brought over on) had a vendetta against the soft drink industry. It's my guess that he carefully removed the caps from all of the bottles and let them sit for the duration of the trip. Just before they reached U.S. soil, he snuck below deck and returned the caps to the bottles, thus ruining, what could have been a wonderful treat for U.S. customers.
If it were carbonated this would taste like a fizzy lemonade. Since it was not, it was pretty much just lemonade in a neat little bottle.

7Up The Uncola

7Up The Uncola

Alright children. It’s the last day before summer vacation so we’re going to play games all day. Let’s start off by playing “Heads Up 7-Up.” You children in the front row are it for the first round. Everyone else put your heads down on your desk with your thumbs up. When the round is over if you’re thumb has been pushed down you must try to guess who pushed it down. What’s that Marcie? Why is it named after such a mediocre pop? Well it’s because the game starts with seven people being it. Oh there are only five people in the front row, so that doesn’t make sense. Okay well how about this, if they called it “Head’s Up Vernor’s Ginger Ale” people would get too excited thinking about that great soda and be distracted from the game. No one loves 7Up, but no one hates it either. It is the pop that is just there. It’s not interesting in anyway. It’s safe. Regular 7Up might as well be orange juice for all I care. I did once have some made with real sugar though. It was a little bit better. It tasted about the same as regular 7Up, but more old fashioned. It was still just lemon lime pop that I would normally pass over on any given day, but I was at a family picnic and it was all that was left in the cooler, so I drank it. I guess I enjoyed it. I certainly didn’t not enjoy it. So yes, I liked it. Marcie now you’ve gone and got me distracted. Let’s just go out into the fields and play Manhunt instead. I’ve been looking for a way to get fired anyways.

A&W Root Beer

A&W Root Beer

I really like that a lot of companies are starting to bring back glass bottles for their pop. I hope it's not a limited time sort of thing. Pop tastes better in glass than in cans or plastic. It's a scientific fact. The fine folks at NASA proved it back in the 70's. I think it was even mentioned in the Watergate files.
This tastes like a better version of the A&W you're used to. It's not as syrupy and it doesn't taste too cheap. I don't think I would ever buy a "normal" A&W if I saw it in a store, but it would be likely for me to pick another one of these up.

Abbott Farms Cider Blackberry

Abbott Farms Cider Blackberry

A lot of people go on and on about strawberries and raspberries. Those people have it all wrong. Although those are both great fruits, the blackberry is your money berry. When they are just ripe they are a perfect food.
I pulled off the highway somewhere in South Carolina and saw a sign that said "Peach Cider." I knew I had to stop. When we entered it was a magical cider world of all varieties. This drink caught my eye, and I thought it was going to be the single greatest drink I've ever had. While it is good, it's not the best I've ever had. When you first sip it, it tastes like wonderful blackberries. Unfortunately when you swallow a harsh aftertaste sets in. I know it's a natural flavor, but I wish the sweetness would last a bit longer. If you've ever in SC and you see a place that sells this, by all means go crazy.
