Arriba Horchata Energy

Arriba Horchata Energy

There is a dark secret in the Warner Brothers universe. Something the brothers in question never wanted to general public to know. You see, their beloved character Speedy Gonzales was in fact a junkie. Well I guess junkie isn’t the appropriate word, as his vice was uppers, but he was indeed an addict. Do you think a mouse could really have all that energy and not be hopped up on something? I’m shocked we didn’t realize it from the start. The mouse took all the pills and powders he could get his hands on if they would keep him on the move.

For his audition to become a cast member of Looney Tunes Gonzales was very nervous and he ended up drinking far too much coffee in the waiting room. As a result he was all jittery and talked way too fast. The higher ups loved the gimmick and he was hired on the spot. As a result he had to get all amped up on caffeine whenever he was shooting. All too soon the coffee wasn’t enough and he moved on to over the counter caffeine pills. Before long he was making back alley deals with various sound and lighting guys. He just couldn’t get enough of the sweet stuff and eventually it led to an early death of heart stoppage. His tomb stone had his catch phrase carved into it and a little yellow hat was placed upon it as his tiny little coffin was lowered into the earth. It was a sad day in Hollywood.

Decades later a Californian company has released an energy drink in honor of this star of the screen. If you ask me it’s a bit tasteless to name an energy drink after a deceased speed freak. One thing that is not tasteless is the contents of the can. It is based on the delicacy from Mr. Gonzales’ home country of Mexico. If you are not familiar it is a cinnamon spiced rice-milk beverage and it is delicious. Arriba did a great job with the flavor, and an even better job of it not tasting like a general energy drink below the classic taste. The weird taurine flavor is there if you search for it, but if someone poured a glass of this the drinker would have no idea that they were getting hyped up on taurine, guarana, ginseng and caffeine. It’s something different for those of us who get tired of the energy drink flavor, but need the pick me up (and dislike coffee).

This homage may be in poor taste, but I can assure you that if he were alive and well today Speedy Gonzales would have stock in this company and a garage full of the stuff.

Aspen Maple Bacon Hot Chocolate

Aspen Maple Bacon Hot Chocolate

You might think this was a good idea if you're one of those dudes who makes pant tents for bacon but if you are a regular person, this is vile. Woah. This is gross. It smells like salt and smoke flavoring and "regular" hot chocolate. When you taste it, you thank your lucky stars that it doesn't taste as bad as it smells. It smells like fake bacon and tastes like fake smoke and has entirely too much salty saltiness.

This is a bad idea that went too far. Reign it in, Aspen.

Firstly this made my girlfriend gag and nearly throw up. Not a good start. Me personally, I didn't gag but from scent to taste it was not good. It has a familiar but unidentifiable taste. It was like a salty and sweet, spiced juice. I wish that I could be more descriptive and if anyone else can point me in the right direction please do. It was a complex flavor that I just couldn't do but is a regular drink in India and Pakistan.

I apologize to our Middle Eastern friends but I did not like this drink. I hope to redeem myself with some of the other drinks I have in my possession and Jay in his.

I can't put my finger on this. It's not bad, but it's not anything I would feel the need to drink again. According to one "source" this is the official drink of Scotland. If so, Scotland, you can do better. This is clearly a soft drink but the flavor is a mix between soda water, orange, and bubble gum. If someone could sum it up better than that, please, do so.

Barr Creepy Cola

Barr Creepy Cola

The United Kingdom doesn’t even know how good they have it. The non-existence of high fructose corn syrup in their sodas is a treat that I could only dream of. This can of cola has 39p printed right on the can. That’s a can of soda for 39 cents in the American world. We’d be lucky to find a generic brand at that price in a convenience store. In the UK you can pay that much for a product from a Scottish company that pre-dates Coca Cola. On top of that it is made with real sugar. It’s just obscene in the best way possible.

I do admit that there is nothing spectacular about the soda. I mean from the taste of it it’s clear why the company hasn’t done many sales outside of the UK, and Coke is a worldwide phenomenon, but it’s a perfectly decent cola. If this were an American cola I would probably lump it in with store brands, as it doesn’t have the right bite to it, but the use of sugar makes it so much more enjoyable.

I’m pretty sure this was just overstock left over from Halloween, and that this is their normal cola in a seasonal can. I still enjoy the idea of a creepy cola though. Made by ghouls just for you.

Barr Originals Ginger Beer

We live in a world where there is a bear in New Jersey that just walks around erect on its hind legs all of the time. It’s not someone in a costume; it’s just the coolest bear ever. It’s just a matter of time until more bears adopt this mode of conveyance and that will most certainly lead to bears riding skateboards, as seen on this can. This portrayal of our furry friend is the peak coolness that any bear could hope to achieve. It makes sense that it should adorn the can of one of the best ginger beers I have tasted in a long time.

Now I love a good burn in my ginger beer, which you may know as I never shut up about it. This soda has somehow surpassed that love of mine. There is definitely some heat to this drink, but it’s more on the mild side and it does not overpower the actual delicious flavor of this soda. There is a ridiculous amount of ginger flavor in here with some burn at the end. It’s very, very good and the kicker is that this is “cheap” soda in Scotland. The cans are like 40p each. If I lived there it wouldn’t just be the deep fried everything that would make me fat.

Barr Originals Cloudy Lemonade

Let’s cut to the chase. There is far too much garbage in the food that we consume. We ingest so much junk that we would never even consider putting in our mouths if we saw it in its true form and not mixed in with our food. Hell, there are a whole bunch of ingredients that are allowed in food in the US that are completely banned in other parts of the world. We are poisoning ourselves, and for the most part we don’t care. I know I eat tons of this junk without even thinking about it. It’s just easier to be ignorant, or force yourself not to think about it. Will I die sooner because of it? Probably, but do I really want to be around when I’m 80+ years old? I’m less than half of that now and I don’t know what to do with my time.

Okay, I went off on a death tangent. My point is that there is a cubic buttload of unnecessary ingredients in food that are more than likely harmful. We tend to think that they are there for a purpose, but then a drink like this comes around and proves you wrong. This lemonade soda is simply carbonated water, sugar and lemon (juice, fruit and flavoring). It has a decent shelf life and it tastes great. So what is the point of all the other junk companies use? This tastes like homemade lemonade that was put in a Soda Stream. It tastes like lemons and that is all I could ask for from this. This will not kill me, well unless I get diabetes from the sugar, but that’s a different death altogether.

Barr Originals Cream Soda With a Twist of Raspberry

Barr Originals Cream Soda With a Twist of Raspberry

The image on the can is a cow wearing an upside down American flag. It’s pretty fitting for the current political state of this country and that is all I will say about that.

Even after all these years it still kind of blows my mind that Barr’s is just the cheap soda in Scotland. It’s everywhere and the cans have 39p printed right on them. Their counties garbage soda is a high quality soda here and I am jealous. Actually, I’m more envious. I would also probably drink way more soda if I lived there and that’s not going to do me any good.

Another thing Scotland apparently likes to do is add raspberry flavoring into other sodas. They somehow made the best ginger beer by doing just that. Unfortunately it didn’t translate as well with cream soda. This starts off so great. It’s a nice fruity cream soda that is reminiscent of Crush’s Soda Mousse. Somewhere in there though it takes a turn and a taste rears up that is similar to coconut. I don’t know what is causing it, but it takes me out of a wonderful experience. It’s like they used coconut water instead of regular water for the base of this drink. It’s just strange. If that particular aspect of this drink were gone this would be completely fantastic.

Barritts Ginger Beer

Barritts Ginger Beer

I really liked the label on this bottle. Unfortunately, the contents of the bottle weren't as great. There is only the slightest of burns to this drink. It has a strange taste to it besides the ginger. It tastes like a ginger ale (not ginger beer) that was poured into a bottle that formerly held a cleaner. Need I mention that said bottle wasn't properly rinsed? I for one am not a fan.

Batch Craft Soda Shirley Temple

Batch Craft Soda Shirley Temple

Back in the 30’s bartenders on the movie lot would mix up some ginger ale (or lemon lime if it was all they had) with some grenadine and throw in a cherry to make it seem special. These drinks had a singular use; they were used to bride a child actress into giving some good takes for the “talkies.” They would pretend they were grown up drinks and only girls who performed well earned their grown up drink. Mix up one of these cocktails and those little feet would be dancing up a storm, never missing a step. If she messed up though, she was given straight sour mix.

Is any of this true? I have no idea. As far as I know this beverage was created by a bartender at bowling alley who was trying to appease the kids on a Saturday afternoon. That, at least, is my history with it. Whatever its origin story it’s a great little drink. This Batch version of the classic drink doesn’t quite capture the essence of the bowling alley version that I love from my youth, but it is a cleaner, more distinguished version. I mean it’s not coming out of a soda gun, so chances are it’s going to be of better quality. Whether you’re trying to get kids to dance, or to bowl there really isn’t a better beverage for the job.
