Busy Bee Yerba Mate Honey Mint

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Honey Mint

I don't know what to say. I'm rarely in this position but I am at a loss for words. I do not know, and I've tried, if I like this. Yerba mate has never been high on my list of things that I really like but I am 95% done with this bottle and drank all of that with an open mind. Where has that gotten me? Nowhere, really. I've been sipping on it for an entire day and I don't know what to make of it.

It's bitter. Yerba mate is bitter. It's not punishing but it doesn't go down smooth, that's for truth. The honey is masked by the flavor of the tea and the mint is nearly non-existent. I'm not penalizing it for what it is and I'm not punishing it for what it could be. This is an honest yerba mate if there ever was one but it is, for me at least, a tough pill to swallow. It's lightly sweetened but it's not for kids. If a kid likes this, they have really crunchy parents and probably real all the time. Put that in your dad's medicine pipe and smoke it if you live in whatever states weed is legal in.

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Ginger Limeade

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Ginger Limeade

Busy Bee is batting 1,000. That’s sports talk for rating perfectly, correct? If not, then whatever the analogy would be to say that they have achieved perfect marks is the one we will go with. I mean I guess it was no shock that if you mix yerba mate, ginger and lime you’re going to have a winner on your hands. Actually for most people that might be something new and unheard of. To me it’s a delicious dream.

Like all of their beverages the yerba mate is the driving force. The other flavors are just an added bonus. You can taste the ginger a decent amount, but it does not give you any burn. Normally that would equate to a complaint from me, but this drink doesn’t need the burn to carry it. It is perfect just the way it is. The lime is there in a limeade fashion, as the label suggests. This is almost like the mate/limeade version of an Arnold Palmer, but with the mix 75/25 in favor of the tea.
I really can’t get enough of these drinks. They are my favorite beverage that I have come across in quite some time.

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Orange Blossom

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Orange Blossom

There is magic in that mate. It has to be as simple as that. I don’t know if it technically is classified as a tea, but for my purposes I will chose to call it that. To that end yerba mate is my tea of choice when it is in its iced form. Guayaki is the company that turned me on to this wonder, but busy Bee may be the ones who perfected it. The quantities I could drink of this are absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know when the last time I was this excited about a tea was, and to that end I believe magic is involved. Now I’m not saying there are dark arts involved. It may just be some guy in the bottling plant that pulls rabbits out of hats to assume the other employees (you know the ones who look at him with disdain) breaking health code violations all day long. I believe that that enough could somehow force a little something extra into this product to make it the wonder that sits in front of me, or rather the wonder that once filled the empty bottle that sits in front of me. Is it really gone so fast?

The base of this is clearly the earthy flavor of yerba mate. It apparently is unsmoked. I didn’t know that was a thing because I am a yerba mate-dummy. They are apparently doing things right though because it tastes wonderful. On top of that is a wonderful combination of orange and wildflower honey. It all melds together into greatness. Nothing is overpowering the other flavors and that is the way things should be. It tastes like it was made by someone’s zany grandmother who doesn’t believe in black tea and only drinks mate. She’s a wise old lady with a tale for every wrinkle on her body.

Busy Bee is somehow connected to Texas Tea, which I can find around Buffalo. I can only hope this new brand/flavors make their way this far north so I can guzzle them all day long.

Guayaki Yerba Mate Unsweetened Hibiscus Lime

Guayaki Yerba Mate Unsweetened Hibiscus Lime

I believe the Eurythmics wrote a song about this tea, or was it Heart? Billy Ocean? Taylor Swift? There are a lot of songs out there that deal with things being great in dreams and I can tell you if nothing else, this beverage is absolutely dreamy. Like most Guayaki teas the yerba mate is the main thing you taste, but this has a very faint floral, hibiscus taste to it with hints of lime. There is nothing in here that is overpowering. You know what though, dreams are never perfect though. There is always an aspect r two that seem out of place. In here I could do with a tad bit more flavoring, and just the smallest amount of sugar. When it comes to tea I almost always prefer them to be unsweetened, but mate benefits from the smallest touch of sweetener. Even in its imperfect state I could drink this forever though.

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Lavender Lemonade

Busy Bee Yerba Mate Lavender Lemonade

This, my friends, is no joke. You see little old me had a sore tummy like the big baby that I am, but I really, really couldn’t pass this up. I figured it was going to be extremely strong/sour and that it would upset my stomach even more. As it turns out it was completely perfect. For the most part this is a mate tea, where the lavender and the lemon are more just a flavoring than leading roles. You may find yourself asking, “What is the point? The flavor should be up front!” For some beverages you may be right, but for this everything sat just where it needed to be. This is nice and earthy with a sweetness that doesn’t get too crazy. I love it. It is a bit strange to have a flavor that is known for its calming effect mixed with a stimulant. I will say that it does give it a nice flavor though.

Guayaki Yerba Mate Bluephoria

Guayaki Yerba Mate Bluephoria

Ten years ago I was sitting in a kitchen in Portland, OR and a mug of tea was placed in front of me. I took one sip and my world changed. Up until that point I had never had yerba mate before and I had no idea how vastly different it was from every other tea I had ever drank up until that point. It was earthy, woodsy, bitter wonderfulness with a nice boost of caffeine. Since that time it has become more prevalent and I couldn’t be happier.

From my own gathering of intel Guayaki seems to be the longest running and most readily available producers of ready to drink yerba mate on the market. I have yet to try one of their flavors that I wasn’t in love with and I drink them all the time. As someone who doesn’t normally drink coffee, these beverages give me a nice little push of energy from their caffeine content.

With the Bluephoria tea they have mixed in elderberry and blueberry juice in with their already wonderful tea. The result is just as good as you would imagine. The juice kind of sits on top of the tea, flavorwise, so there’s not so much a new taste, just the separate flavors hanging out together, and that is how I like my tea. It has aa decent sweetness to it without tasting like liquid candy. The fact that it tastes like blueberries and elderberries and not just some generic sugar-berry amalgamation is what makes this drink so great. Guayaki has done it again and I can’t wait for their line to expand yet again.

Mate Bros Yerba Mate Original

Mate Bros Yerba Mate Original

Timmy Junior was just like his dad in most ways. They both liked baseball. They both liked cars. They both liked pinball. One thing they disagreed on was yerba mate. Timmy Senior loved it. He loved the bitterness and earthiness. Junior did not. It was too hard for him to get behind. It was such an "adult" drink because it was such a strong flavor. He just couldn't get behind it. Senior drank it constantly instead of coffee. Junior had to just drink coffee because he needed the caffeine but unfortunately couldn't handle all that yerba mate had to offer until one day.

One sunny, summer day, Senior brought him a can of Mate Bros Yerba Mate and told him they might be able to shake hands on this. Sugar was the second ingredient and cut into the bitterness enough that he loved it. It still had some of the earthiness of an original yerba mate but the bitterness was wildly diminished. It was like a sweet tea with yerba mate instead of black tea. Finally they would be able to cheers at family functions, split drinks and talk about their collective love for yerba mate.

Guayaki Yerba Mate Unsweetened Terere

Guayaki Yerba Mate Unsweetened Terere

This is simply yerba mate and nothing else. It has that great bitter not-tea tea flavor like yerba mate should. It’s perfect for when you need a little bit of caffeine and you’ve had your fill of sugar. Everything this company releases is near perfect and this is the base of it all. It’s wonderful, and if you’re not familiar with yerba mate this company is the place to start. If you’re cool with unsweetened drinks I would definitely start with this variety.

Guayaki Yerba Mate Peach Terere

Guayaki Yerba Mate Peach Terere

There are very few things in this world that bring me more pleasure than jumping off of something that is a decent height into water. The thing is that I am not a fan of swimming, and being in the water doesn’t do much for me. It’s overcoming the fear and the drop that is what I enjoy. I should probably go skydiving at some point. This weekend my ladyfriend and I took a trip to Ithaca to do some hiking and we ended up at a spot where you could cliff jump. There were different levels, and the one that the locals said was a 40ft drop was the best. There was a 60ft one, but I was sketched out because you had to jump out a bit to clear a large branch/log that was in the water. I jumped over and over and the panic that struck me about midway down never lessened.

This all really has nothing to do with this yerba mate tea, but that is where I was physically, as well as mentally when I drank it. I was parched and exhausted, so this refreshed me and the natural caffeine in it gave me the little push I needed to continue on. It was a perfect choice for when you’re hanging out at a manmade dam in nature just outside of a hippy town.

Yerba mate is so great because it tastes so earthy, without tasting like you’re drinking the water that was just filtered through a potted plant. It tastes natural and right. As we all know peach in tea is a slippery slope because most of the time it ends up being too strong, and tasting like peach candy. Guayaki held back with their peach. It’s there, but it doesn’t overshadow the taste of the mate. The fact that natural peach was used for the flavoring also helps. As a result of all of this, what I drank was one of the best peach teas I have ever encountered. Yerba mate is a different world if you’re not used to it, but it’s worth the learning curb when you grow to love it.

You know what yerba mate is from South American rainforests. I’m sure people cliff jump there, so my initial paragraph wasn’t pointless rambling.

I bought it, tried it and thought it tasted familiar. A quick visit to the Guayaki website told me that it's just a rebranding of their Pure Empower Mint tea. So yeah, go there and read that to see what it's like.
