New York Seltzer Peach Soda

New York Seltzer Peach Soda
I'm pretty sure that everyone in the world who remembers New York Seltzer from its original run was excited when they heard that it was coming back (if they heard that it was coming back). I'm also pretty sure that 99% of those people who actually got their hands on one twisted it open, took a sip, and thought “wow I remember these being a lot better.”

Has the world changed, or is it just our tastes? Is this the exact same recipe that people enjoyed back in the day? If so have our taste buds just evolved? This tastes like an average peach soda. The flavor isn't overly strong, but it's there and it's sweet. I want something special from this and it's just not there. There is nothing horribly wrong with it, but I want it to be spectacular and it's just not.

Karma Wellness Water Probiotics Blueberry Lemonade

Karma Wellness Water Probiotics Blueberry Lemonade
Blueberry lemonade. I've got to say, it's good. I like mixing it. I like shakin' it up. I like(d) drinkin' it up. That's all that you need from me? Wait wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut? You want a review? People still come to this site expecting reviews? I tell stories, man. Yesterday was the fourth of July and like ten people made a whirlpool in my cousin's pool. It was awesome. Is that what you want? I've got plenty of these. I've got plenty but I guess you don't want that. You want me to say things like, "This isn't gross. This actually tastes like blueberry lemonade. I've never had blueberry lemonade and I think it would be sourer but taste similar. It kind of tastes like if they made a blueberry lemonade Gatorade. Three thumbs up. Would drink again."

I thought you wanted more from me. I'm more than a great product reviewer. I've got skills and traits you don't even know about. We're growing apart. I think we need to see other people and I'm going to start with that chick with the cool boobs over there.

Jones Stripped Huckleberry Soda

Jones Stripped Huckleberry Soda
Anytime there is a soda that is flavored by a berry that isn't one of the big 4 (straw, blue, black, rasp) I will happily drink it. “Rare' berries are almost always tasty, and so are the sodas that are based off of them. This is a diet drink that is sweetened with cane sugar, agave and stevia., but I will say that if it were solely sweetened with cane sugar it would be ridiculously good (as long as Jones didn't go overboard with the sugar, like they seem to like to do). As it is it is still quite an enjoyable beverage, stevia and all. It has a vague off-diet taste, but the flavor of the huckleberry is nice enough to distract your taste buds. It helps that it's a blend of sweeteners and not only stevia. Jones is doing pretty well for itself.

Jelly Belly Gourmet Soda Tangerine

Jelly Belly Gourmet Soda Tangerine
So tangerines are superior oranges, correct? A little sweeter, with a stronger flavor and they are easier to peel. How about we just accept them as the standard from here on out? A good orange is fantastic, but I feel like I have more bad oranges than good ones, and I've never had an unpleasant tangerine.

I was hoping that the improvement that is tangerines would translate to this soda, but unfortunately this is mostly just generic soda flavor with a sweet hint of a slightly different orange. It's not bad, but it is completely forgettable, which is not something we look for here at Thirsty Dudes. This is certainly not the gourmet soda that it claims to be, but at least it has cane sugar and isn't super thick and syrupy.

Someone make me a proper tangerine soda. I need to taste the superiority…€¦wow that sounded unintentionally fascist.

Karma Wellness Water Probiotics Berry Cherry

Karma Wellness Water Probiotics Berry Cherry
I enjoy the powder much more than the concentrate but this one didn't taste as much like Flintstone vitamins as I would have liked. It was not bad but it was just not what I thought. It was actually like a dark, sweet juice more than a water. I don't know what the line is between water and juice but if you gave this to one hundred people, I would say that everyone would call it a juice.

Karma is good at coming up with new flavors and this is good. It's not anything special. It's not a flavor that you haven't had before but they are always coming out with something new. This, if anything, is a nice, familiar juice that is low in calories and high in probiotics. That's a win, right? What more could you ask for? If you say anything you should not be so greedy. I already told you that Karma comes out with new stuff all the time. Jeez.

Karma Wellness Water Probiotics Apple Cinnamon

Karma Wellness Water Probiotics Apple Cinnamon
Without looking it up on the internet, someone tell me what percentage of American suffer from stomach/digestive issues. I'm not going to look it up but I'll throw a number out there. I'll say 72%. That's a lot of the population with problems, and those are problems that this beverage can help alleviate. This bottle is jam packed with probiotics, which are live bacteria and yeasts of the positive variety that do a bunch to make you feel better.

You grab this and think, “Oh good this is going to make my guts feel better.” Then you realize that it's an interactive drink and things are even better. You get to peel off the label from the top and then push all of the vitamins, minerals and probiotics that exist in powder form into the water waiting below. Then you shake it like a paint machine mixing up a gallon of paint that you bought to paint your fence, but it just sits there for far too long because you're procrastinating. Oh, is my real life seeping into this review? That will happen.

So this is fun, it is functional and on top of that it tastes good. I'm wary of apple cinnamon beverages that are not cider, because normally things just do not turn out the way you want them to. Karma has figured it out though. I don't know if it's because it stays in a powder form until right before you drink it, but this tastes so much like real cinnamon sprinkled onto dried apples that it's ridiculous. This is made with stevia as well as cane sugar, and I would have no idea that a zero calorie sweetener was in here if I hadn't read the label. It's mostly a light apple water with a heavy cinnamon overtone. It's great. I could see myself drinking this even if my guts didn't need the help that 72% of American need.

Steaz Cactus Water With Green Tea

Steaz Cactus Water With Green Tea
I think I speak for all people when I say that prickly pear is a wonderful fruit. Pears blow but add some spikes and thorns and nails and it flips it right around. Make a pear dangerous to eat and it makes it better than its soft, smooth brother. Or cousin. They're related but maybe just through marriage. It counts but barely.

This is wonderful. The green tea isn't powerful but you can taste a little bite. The prickly pear, though, she shines through with beams of light as bright as the G.D. sun. It's a soft flavored drink. Real sugar and a little bit of Stevia come together and really round this little guy out.

This rarely happens, but I finished the drink before I finished writing this review. I'm on the top of the third paragraph and it's gone. I've polished off twelve ounces in like 100 words. This is great. It's not terrible for you, either. At fifty calories per can, I'd easily take a tallboy of this any day of the week. You hear me, Steaz? Tallboys. I'm inventing the demand as I type. Everyone who reads my words is seeing it in my head wondering if it exists. Make it exist. Do the right thing, Steaz. Do the right thing.

Fiz Root Beer

Fiz Root Beer
Roc City (Rochester) makes this and it's good stuff. Cane sugar and a decent root beer. I don't mean "decent" as in it just passes satisfactory, it's good. I drank the whole thing. No sharzies and I share everything. This was all mine and I drank the whole thing. No. I do not want a medal for drinking a whole bottle of pop like everyone else. I'm just illustrating the point that it was so good that I didn't give any to the drain.

It did taste like root beer and did not linger too long. It was a pretty good model of what a root beer should taste like. I bet those Roc City tough guys are pretty proud of themselves for making a very fine root beer.

Steaz Cactus Water With Cucumber & Green Tea

Steaz Cactus Water With Cucumber & Green Tea
Are you aware that the desert is a dead, dry place with no hope? Did you also know that cucumbers are the most refreshing thing this world has ever seen? If only cucumbers grew in the desert maybe life would exist. Because you know, nothing lives in the desert…€¦oh wait; a lot of things live in the desert. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't lead richer lives if cucumber was a normal part of life for them. Steaz has taken that refreshing vegetable and combined it with prickly pear (the fruit on a cactus) as well as some green tea and the results are quite nice. The prickly pear is nice and sweet, but it allows the cucumber to cut through and give you that relief you so desperately crave. The only downside to this at all is that they tried to cut down on calories by using stevia along with cane sugar. It's not horrible, but you can tell it's there, which I would prefer it wasn't. Other than that there is nothing but smooth sailing with this drink. Go ahead and drop me off in a remote desert location hundreds of miles from anywhere. As long as I had a couple cans of this I would be just fine, or dead. Fine or dead, one or the other.

New York Seltzer Root Beer Soda

New York Seltzer Root Beer Soda
Unfortunately I think this company is running on nostalgia and not much more. I for one was more excited than I should have been when I heard that new York Seltzer would be hitting the shelves again after a long absence. The thing is that when I used to drink it, I didn't have much of a relationship with soda outside of the big names and store brand. This seemed special at the time, but now it just tastes average. This is like someone took a survey of what a hundred people thought root beer tasted like and used the results to make this soda. It definitely has a root beer flavor, but it comes off as generic. This is a lighter soda version of root beer barrel candies.

I didn't mean to come off so negative with this review. There is nothing bad about it, and I would happily drink it again. It's just a little too on the nose, when I had expected so much more. Nostalgia will be the death of us.

Bigelow Charleston Tea Plantation Sweet Tea

Bigelow Charleston Tea Plantation Sweet Tea
I don't think there is a Southerner out there who could make a complaint about this tea. I understand sweet tea is a huge part of the culture down there and it ranks right up there with any sort of religious artifact. This is simple and pure, the way sweet tea is supposed to be. It's just black tea (that was grown in South Carolina), cane sugar, and phosphoric acid (to help fight mold and bacteria).
There is actually less sugar in here than I would have expected from the taste. It only has 28g in the whole bottle. I still think it's pretty sweet and you can tell that they used cane sugar from the taste. Maybe I was wrong before. Maybe Southerners will be all up in arms because it's not sweet enough. It will be like someone desecrated their most holy artifact and that will be out for blood, sugary sweet blood. I don't understand how people below the Mason Dixon have teeth at all with the amount of sugar I am led to believe they consume.

Jelly Belly Gourmet Soda French Vanilla

Jelly Belly Gourmet Soda French Vanilla
When a company who is known for making candy decides to start making soda, you'll have to forgive me for having some reservations. Shockingly Jelly Belly beat the odds and their sodas have ranged from decent to pretty good. I had expected grossness all around with more sugar than the Domino factory. I'm happy to say I was wrong. When it came to this French Vanilla soda I expected an average sweet cream soda. What I got was something a little bit more than your typical cream soda. This actually reminds me a lot of IBC's cream soda, which brings me back to high school where I would drink 40's of it at parties attempting to fit in with my classmates who were getting drunk.

There is a something a little classy about this soda. Sure, it's still pretty sweet, but it has a real vanilla flavor to it. Somehow the candy company made a soda that doesn't taste “candied.” I fear that many people who would really enjoy this would pass it up because of the Jelly Belly label. I'd like to see a study where this and a version of this with a different label and name were sold beside each other and see which sells better. Marketing, ya know?

Steaz Cactus Water With Starfruit & Green Tea

Steaz Cactus Water With Starfruit & Green Tea
I know that to everyone out there it sounds like being a part of Thirsty Dudes is a nonstop party. I mean sure, Mike and I have abandoned our families and live in a giant penthouse in the fanciest of buildings downtown. Sure, we race motorcycles everywhere we go, including both the public and private elevators to our penthouse. You know how some nicer fridges have a filtered water tap built into the door? Ours dispenses ice cold sarsaparilla. We have an entire freezer that is filled with nothing but green tea ice cream mochi. That doesn't make us any different than you our mild mannered readers. We still ride our prototype hoverboards one push at a time just like you. We are still humbled when companies send us advance flavors before they hit the market. Actually, that makes us feel pretty special. It's not the millions of dollars we have made from reviewing these drinks that fill us with a sense of pride, it's the little things like this.

When a package arrived the other day of the three flavors of the new Steaz cactus water line, I was pumped. You know pumped like when I ride the zip line down from our penthouse to the hot dog cart a few blocks away. I couldn't wait to review it and help get the word out on a product I was sure was going to be fantastic. The problem was that I was completely incapacitated from the flu. I didn't leave the couch, except to crawl to the rest room for about 72 hours. I thought it was the end of my life of luxury and leisure. As it does, time passed and my health returned and here I am enjoying a can of starfruit and green tea cactus water, even if it is a few days later that I would have liked it to be.

It was worth the wait folks. This is delicious. Cactus water is basically nature's version of Gatorade and it is far superior to what has been dumped on coach's heads for decades. It is high in antioxidants, reduces inflammation and is just chock full of electrolytes. This is sweet, smooth, and fruity. The green tea tastes is only vaguely there in the aftertaste, but the starfruit is right up front with the sweetness of the cactus water. There is some stevia in the mix as well, but I wouldn't really have guessed that from the taste, which is a sign of proper use of any zero calorie sweetener. Steaz has not disappointed.

I wonder how many cans of this it would take to fill one of those Gatorade coolers. I'll need to use the power of science to figure that out so I can be prepared for our next air hockey tournament up in the loft. I'm going to destroy Mike and then have the butler dump this on me when I win. Just like the champ I am.

Frisa Sparkling Botanical Beverage Ginger Hibiscus

Frisa Sparkling Botanical Beverage Ginger Hibiscus
This drink should come with a rabbit and a top hat, because it is a magic trick. Frisa makes nothing but quality beverages, but I did not know that they also were practitioners of the dark arts. You seem confused, so let me explain. When you pen this bottle you are greeted with the most wonderful ginger scent. Just the smell alone you know you are in for a treat, as if the fancy looking bottle wasn't enough to inform you. So you pour yourself a nice glass and get ready for the ride of your life. You take a sip and you know you were right, this is fantastic. It is a perfect blend of ginger and hibiscus with a little lemon thrown in. There is no burn from the ginger at all, but it tastes so good that you can't bring yourself to care in the least. Then you swallow and a look of befuddlement passes over your face. What happened to the flavor? You take another sip and the greatness is back, but yet again as soon as you swallow it is gone. There must be some enchantment on this sparkling beverage because the instant it is swallowed all trace of it is pretty much gone from your taste buds. I don't know how it works, but I guess that is part of the trick. I tried to let it sit in my mouth for a while and the flavor stayed as long as I kept it in there, but as soon as I swallowed it was gone. I've never had a beverage do this before. It's like someone invited David Blaine to a party in my mouth and didn't inform me. I can get over the strangeness though as it just tastes so damn good while it's still on my tongue.

Fiz Buffalo Birch Beer

Fiz Buffalo Birch Beer
When you go into a small local beverage store and see a soda called “Buffalo Birch Beer,” and you are me, the first thing you think is “How the hell is there a new soda company in Buffalo and I didn't know about it? I'm a consummate professional and I should really be up on these things!” a quick label then informs you that it's actually from Rochester, NY (a little over an hour away) and that it's made by College Club, a company you are very familiar with. That is twice that I was duped today. I was also told that Boss Hogg from Dukes of Hazzard was from Buffalo as well, which broke my brain. I then found out that he's actually from Olean which is even further than Rochester. I guess the lesson here is that Buffalo is great and everyone wants to pretend that they are a part of it in some way.

I have nothing bad to say about College Club. They make delicious soda that is ridiculously cheap. Their normal line comes in reusable glass bottles and cost about 35 cents each. You just can't beat it for a family gathering, especially with their selection. It appears that Fiz is their venture into cane sugar sweetened sodas that come in normal glass bottles. This does taste similar to their other birch beer. It's dark and rich, the cane sugar makes this way better though. It's obviously less syrupy and the wintergreen really seems to shine a lot more. This is great. I wish it really were from Buffalo, but Rochester isn't that far, and I'm glad to see that things are going well for College Club. They have always treated Thirsty Dudes well and it's nice to see them expanding.

3 Dachshunds Root Beer

3 Dachshunds Root Beer
All root beer. It's been a while, friend. So long, in fact, that this root beer took a little turn into "potentially spoiled" territory. I can taste through it so I will be rating it as a non-spoiled bottle of grossness.

This is a fine root beer. If you like root beer, you will like this. If you love root beer, you will think this is "just another" root beer. This is a calmer version of a pretty generic root beer but the cane sugar makes it better because the taste doesn't linger. It's got a medium bite and it's not too dark and not too light. I don't think that this was made "from scratch" but probably from a concentrated syrup. Look, no judgement, it just tastes like it.

A dashshund bit my dog the first time I took her to the dog park so if I had three dashshunds around me, I think I'd be a bit skeptical. I'd probably be on the defense like they're going to attack. If I had three bottles of this root beer around me, two of them would go to waste.

Wild Harvest Coconut Water Chocolate

Wild Harvest Coconut Water Chocolate
Remember when you were young and you would make chocolate milk from the Hershey powder that came in a tin. No matter how much you mixed it in that powder would never fully dissolve in the milk and it always seemed like it was chocolate and milk and not a complete cohesion of the two? Well this is the coconut water version of that. I've had chocolate coconut water that tasted like it could have come right off the tree in that form, but this tastes like two separate thing that just happened to get put in the same can. Lucky for us they are two enjoyable things and they don't ruin each other at all. I enjoyed this, but it feels like they rushed to get it to market and didn't make it as good as it could have been.

III Dachshunds Root Beer

III Dachshunds Root Beer
III Dachshunds is a brewery in Milwaukie, WI, which also makes this delicious root beer. I've heard it claimed that they chose the name because the owners had three Dachshund dogs and they were their entire world. I'd like to submit that there is a different reason. This brewery is located in Wisconsin. The official food (pretty much) of the state is bratwurst. While brats and hotdogs are not the same thing they are close enough and another name for a hotdog is a wiener, which also happens to be a common name used to describe dachshunds (wiener dogs). I'd like to propose the ridiculous theory that the company actually named their company after their love of sausage and not for dogs at all. They just have a little shame over their Wisconsin pride (not that anyone actually would, it's a magical place).
Wherever the name is from this is a quality soda. It is certainly no generic “mix” or store brand root beer. It is dark and bold. All of the flavors that were originally used to make root beer, that have since been watered down to homogenize it, all stand up tall proclaiming their stake in the soda game. There's wintergreen, vanilla, caramel, sassafras, licorice and all of the others. On top of a great flavor it also is very carbonated, which is something that I always enjoy in a soda.

Grab your dogs. Grab your brats. Hell, grab some cheese even. Get it all together pop open a bottle of this and sit back and enjoy yourself. You put in a long day at work and you deserve to relax, Wisconsin style.

Izze Sparkling Water Beverage Mandarin Lime

Izze Sparkling Water Beverage Mandarin Lime
Things got rough for the members of Guns and Roses after the mid 90's. I mean just take a look at Axl Rose. Most of the members wallowed in their former fame and fell into the gutter, but guitarist Izzy Stradlin worked with his money and invested in beverages. He hung up his Gibson for bubbles and slowly started an empire. Wait…€¦Oh…€¦his name and the company name are spelled differently. He has nothing to do with the beverage company, huh? I'm just having another one of my fever dreams brought on from boredom. Sorry about that. Imagine is a guitarist with that fame, from that era had the restraint to use such simple packaging on his beverages. That would be the real miracle. If what I said had been true I'm sure this bottle would have been covered in Ed Hardy style design. Let's count our blessings that the two are not related and sit back and enjoy this sparkling water.

The Izze sparkling waters are essentially seltzer with the smallest amount of cane sugar added to take away a little of the bitterness. There are only 2g of sugar and that leads to 10 calories. Not bad at all. The lime is definitely a bit stronger than the mandarin orange, but it's still in there and this is quite pleasant. I imagine it would make a great mixer for some sort of alcohol, but what do I know. I'm just going to enjoy it the way it is. It gives me tropical feelings. I need those in this snow.

Jelly Belly Gourmet Soda Sour Cherry

Jelly Belly Gourmet Soda Sour Cherry
I want to ask a serious question here, who decided to name the “cherry” flavor? I've eaten an obscene amount of cherries in my life and not once have they tasted like what companies have been labeling cherry for years. It was like they created a flavor that was red and they said, “Cherries are also red. This must be cherry. Nothing else on the planet is red but cherries. All I see are cherries. Are you a cherry, because you're wearing a red shirt? You most certainly are a cherry, and I shall refer to you as such from now on.”

This soda tastes a little closer to what a cherry actually is, but it still borders on that flavor that is not really cherry. Also the sourness in here tastes like it was something added, and not just a tart fruit. It's not horrible, but I can't see an adult finishing a bottle of this. To be fair if it wasn't for the use of cane sugar I would probably have written this off as garbage store brand soda, but the cane sugar does give it a bit more legitimacy in my world.
